Dealing With Anxiety In An Uncertain World

  • by

Mental illness is on the rise in the United States, particularly depression and anxiety disorder. From the economy and the job market to healthcare and politics, it seems like everything that has been going on the in last decade is enough to give one a heart attack. However, it’s important to find inner peace, now more than ever. With the combination of internal and external issues, finding peace amongst the chaos can feel even more stressful.

Personally, I like to take at least 15 to 30 minutes to just meditate or pray, even those who are spiritual or religious can benefit from taking some time to clear the mind and zone out from the everyday jumble. It also helps to remind myself of certain things when I’m feeling down or panicky:

  1. Some things you just have no control of- I have accepted that there are certain things that have to run its course and there’s really nothing I can do but wait it out. It doesn’t me helpless nor does it mean I’m not trying to do anything to change my situation,  it simply means that I can use my energy on things that actually need my effort.
  2. Focus my energy on things I’ve neglected- While worrying and stressing out over certain things in life, sometimes you have to step back from the situation and look at the thing you may have ignored because you were so distracted. The littles things can make a big difference on our perspective in a situation. When feeling down, I find cleaning the house or just a nice shower can give me a little confidence boost and getting rid of clutter helps me think.
  3. Everything has a timeline, be patient- Anxiety can stem from being impatient for an outcome. Waiting can be painful depending on what you’re waiting on. But remember, everything goes in a cycle and everything eventually falls into place on its own time.

That’s just a few of the things I remind myself when dealing with depression and anxiety. What are some things you do to ease your mind?
